What Makes Golden Hour So Special?

Golden hour is that magical time of day just before sunset (or just after sunrise), when the sunlight is soft, golden, and directional. It reduces harsh shadows, flatters skin tones, and brings a cinematic glow to photos—perfect for senior portraits that are both artistic and natural.

In Bend, this time of day often bathes the landscape in warm tones, enhancing everything from mountain silhouettes to wild grass in open meadows.

Anna’s Golden Hour Senior Session | Heritage High School Senior Portraits

If you ask me the best time of day to take your senior portraits, my answer will always be golden hour. This magical time—about an hour before sunset—bathes everything in soft, warm light that is absolutely dreamy for photography. Anna’s golden hour senior photo session was the perfect example of why I love this time so much. Every frame glowed with warmth, movement, and personality, and I’m so excited to share them with you!

Why Golden Hour Makes Senior Photos Shine

The beauty of golden hour isn’t just in the sunset—it’s in the quality of the light. Soft and flattering, golden light wraps around you, making skin tones look radiant and creating that unmistakable “glow” in your portraits. For Anna’s session, the timing was just right, and the lighting could not have been more perfect.

Fall is one of the best seasons for golden hour photography. Not only does the sun set earlier—meaning you don’t have to wait until late evening—but the natural warmth in the air and the colors in the landscape give your images an extra level of depth and richness.

The Perfect Setting: Apison, Tennessee

We photographed Anna’s senior portraits on my grandfather’s property in Apison, Tennessee—a spot that’s always close to my heart. That day, the weather was mild, the skies were clear, and the late-afternoon sun was nothing short of magical. It’s one of those moments where everything aligns—the setting, the season, and the subject.

Style That Brings Photos to Life

One of my favorite things about Anna’s session was her choice of outfits. She wore a flowy dress that moved beautifully in the breeze, giving her photos that extra bit of motion and elegance. Flowy fabrics are a golden hour photographer’s best friend—they catch the light in such a stunning way and add a sense of whimsy to your portraits.
